A church in Dover got a new steeple cross on Wednesday after the previous one was removed because it was found to be in poor condition after more than a century of sitting atop the house of worship.

A ceremony was held outside of Christ Episcopal Church in Dover following the noon service there. A hymn was sung as the cross and a stand were placed atop the steeple.

Rev. Charles Weiss said the decision to remove the old cross was made after the post was determined to be in poor condition after braving the elements for more than a century.

"Having a cross on top of the church obviously matters because it reminds us that we're here to love each other, so a church without a cross just isn't right," he said.

The new cross was constructed by David LaMotta, a parishioner who said watching the new cross go atop the church was emotional for him because it was finished on the day his nephew died.

"It means a lot to me when I see it up," he said. "Whenever I look up there, I'm gonna remember my nephew."
