OCEAN CITY, Md. - As temperatures soared into the upper 90s Thursday, people flocked to the beach in search of relief. And despite a heat advisory being issued for the first time this week, many said temperatures felt more tolerable than in recent days.

What wasn't comfortable was the temperature of the sand.

"I was walking from here down to Fifth Street and I literally had to drop down to my knees because the sand was so hot," said Julia Johnson of Delmar, Maryland. Many beachgoers said they traveled from other states in search of sun and fun, and the heatwave wasn't going to change their plans.

"We're going to stay in the water and we're going to drink as much water as we possibly can so we can enjoy some of the sun," said Patrick Rehm. "Because we don't get to do that as much in Pennsylvania."

By mid-afternoon Thursday, several hundred people had packed the beach and umbrellas dotted the landscape regardless of the heat advisory.

Johnson said the key to staying safe was knowing when to take a break.

"You gotta take a break," said Johnson. "You can't be out very long, especially today.   I think last time we checked it feels like 104."

And, according to the forecast, it was only getting warmer.
