QUANTICO, Md.- A staffing shortage at Maryland's minimum-security Poplar Hill Pre-Release Unit in Quantico is prompting the transfer of inmates to another prison.

Salisbury Mayor Jake Day said inmates at Poplar Hill will be moved to Eastern Correctional Institution in Westover on a temporary basis. Day also said the city is trying to prevent Poplar Hill from closing.

The mayor noted that he is reaching out to members of the Eastern Shore Delegation in Wicomico County for support.

This is not the first time inmates at the Poplar Hill have been transferred to other facilities. The Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services took similar action in 2009 in an effort to reduce staffing overtime costs.
