Wicomico County Plans to Upgrade the Morris Mill Dam

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md.- If approved, Wicomico County hopes to upgrade the Morris Mill dam this fall.

Director of Public Works for Wicomico County, Dallas Baker, said engineers estimate this project to come out to $1.4 million dollars.

Baker said if approved they would like to completely re-do the Morris Mill dam which, in turn will tack on about 50 more years to its life.

"We're going to be rebuilding the outfall structure which is the device that controls the water level in the pond behind the dam, we're going to be putting in new pipes underneath the road for the water to go through, and we're also going to be armoring the downstream slope of the dam to protect it against erosion," Baker said.

Baker said there would be changes in traffic and the construction would take between nine and 12 months.

Andrew Preller who lives nearby said it's great to see the county upgrading the dam, but he has some concerns. " Its on my property id like to see the pond as it is if its going to help somebody with the dam I really don't have a problem with that I just don't want to see any of the wildlife which has been there for years knocked out or disrupted in any way," Preller said.

Wicomico County is holding a public hearing on July 26th for any comments or concerns on the construction.

Baker said if all goes well, they would like to see construction start by the fall.
