MILFORD, Del.- A Milford woman is behind bars on child abandonment and related charges following accusations that she left her son with a medical condition outside a business one evening and didn't return.
Milford police said that shortly after 7 p.m. Thursday, July 13, officers were called to the 900 block of North DuPont Boulevard (US Rt 113) to investigate a report of a child who had been sitting near a business for an extended period of time.
When officers arrived on the scene, they met a 14-year-old boy who reportedly told them he had been left there by his mother and was waiting for her return. Police said a further investigation determined the child had a medical condition that appeared to have gone untreated. The boy was also left with medications with no direction on how they should be taken, according to police.
The boy was taken into custody and turned over to the Delaware Division of Family Services. His mother, 48-year-old Jill R. Griffith, was arrested Sunday on a warrant charging her with abandonment of a child 14-years-old or over, child abuse- second-degree recklessly/intentionally cause physical injury to a child with intellectual disabilities, and endangering the welfare of a child.
Griffith was presented at the Justice of the Peace Court #7 where bail was set at $1,100 secured, along with a no contact order with the victim. Griffith was then committed to the custody of the Delaware Department of Correction at the Delores J. Baylor Women's Correctional Institution.
