DELMARVA (WBOC) -- The drug crisis on opioids is sweeping the nation and has hit home right here on Delmarva.

Sales for opioids have soared and grossed more than $20 billion over the past 15 years. With patients being taken off pain killer medications, some resort to other drugs including heroin and fentanyl. The CDC says since 2000, there has been a 200% increase in opioid-linked deaths, with heroin and fentanyl often being detected in the system of those overdoses.

While there are many coalitions, recovery groups and rehabilitation programs being carried out all throughout the region, being aware, and understanding the reality behind the epidemic is how fight the crisis and get those fighting addiction the help they need.
