DEWEY BEACH, Del.- After many years of planning, World War II Artillery Fire Control Tower #3 south of Dewey Beach is finally being restored.

On Monday, the Town of Dewey Beach, along with the Delaware Seashore Preservation Foundation, Fort Miles Historical Association and Delaware State Parks, began restoration of the tower.

Weather has been the main threat to the historic structures. The wind that blows west blasts sand, which breaks down the surface of the towers.

Larry Brown, president of the Delaware Seashore Preservation Foundation, said this is a restoration that has been long overdue.

"They were built to only last 20 years and it's 70 years later," he said. "...I guess the construction materials and techniques they used were so solid that they're still in great shape today."

Dr. Gary Wray of the Fort Miles Historical Association said, "We're the only state in the country that has all of its fire patrol towers. And this tower, once we put a spiral staircase in it, it's going to allow our public at the southern end of the Delaware beach look out almost 15 miles out into the ocean."

Visitors are welcomes inside the tower as the restoration work continues. The project is set to be completed on Thursday.
