Major Road Paving Work Set to Begin in Wicomico County

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - Wicomico County has budgeted $4.5 million for repaving county roads in fiscal year 2018. Preparation for the work began July 1, and a majority of the work is expected to begin this fall.

The work comes after the county's road division lost 90 percent of its funding from the state a few years back, leading to years of neglect.

"We're in a position now that we're in a backlog and we're trying to catch up from those years of no funding," said Wicomico Roads Supervisor Lee Outen.

The $4.5 million budgeted for the repaving effort is a $500,000 increase over last year's budget.

The county said that extra money will go toward repaving many of the area's bumpy, neglected, rural roads.

For drivers, the road paving work can't come soon enough.

"One time -- I didn't even really see it -- it was raining real hard and I hit a pothole and I thought it knocked out my shocks so it's really inconvenient for a lot of drivers around the area," said Philisha Davis of Salisbury.

County officials said they understand drivers' concerns.

"We're in a position now that we're in a backlog and we're trying to catch up from those years of no funding," said Outen.

Outen said the planned road repaving will close down lanes and cause some delays.

The list of roads in this year’s schedule, as well as a description of the various surface treatments, can be found below or by visiting the county's Roads Division website
