HARRINGTON, Del.- Authorities say a  tractor-trailer collided with a freight train overnight in Harrington. Debris from the tractor-trailer were dispersed throughout the road resulting in the closure of north and southbound lanes of Route 13.

According to Earl Brode, deputy chief of the Harrington Fire Department, the incident occurred shortly after 1 a.m. on South DuPont Highway in the area of Corn Crib Road.

Brode said firefighters arrived on scene to find a tractor-trailer had been struck by a train, causing heavy damage to the trailer.

According to Brode, the driver of the tractor-trailer and the train crew were not injured.

Brode said the tractor-trailer was carrying non-hazardous items such as backpack sprayers, weed eaters and chainsaws.

Route 13 was shut down for about 45 minutes while firefighters and the Delaware Department of Transportation removed the debris from the roadway.

After the debris were removed and the train was moved out of the way, the highway was opened back up.

The Harrington Police Department is investigating the incident. Delaware State Police also assisted on scene.
