CAMBRIDGE, Md.- The City of Cambridge is one step closer to the unveiling of the highly anticipated Cambridge Marketplace, formally known as Cambridge Plaza.

The project consists of three phases and the second phase began today.

Charles M. Fairchild II, developer and owner of Fairchild Properties LLC, knows the process will bring big business, but he says there's a bigger purpose.

"We're changing Cambridge, and that's what's really cool, it's special, they needed it, we're at the right place at the right time," he said.

Early this morning, workers were busy tearing down the old Super Fresh building. A 36,000 square foot Lidl grocery store will soon take its place.

The Cambridge Planning Commission and Planning Department attended the demolishing and gave the green light for the project to continue.

Hubert Trego of Cambridge Planning and Zoning called this project unique.

"We've had some things along here, but nothing to the extent that this is," he said.

As the project moves forward, some popular names will call the marketplace home.

A Chick-fil-A, Starbucks, and Taco Bell are said to be in place by the end of 2018.

Phase three of the project is the Shore Health Medical Pavilion, this phase of is expected to be open to the public by 2022.
