Bennett Middle Cafeteria Expansion Proposed Amid Overcrowding Concerns

FRUITLAND, Md. - Wicomico County Public Schools has proposed a cafeteria expansion at Bennett Middle School,  just two years after the school opened its doors in August 2015 in Fruitland.

Wicomico County Public Schools said severe overcrowding at BMS is causing safety concerns among staff and students and has resulted in several injuries.

The current cafeteria seats 335 students and was designed in 2013-2014 when the projected student enrollment was 988 students.

However, BMS currently has 1,058 students. To accommodate the current overcrowding in the cafeteria, six extra tables have been added on the stage platform to provide enough seating for students.

The cost of the project is $1.4 million. Wicomico County Public Schools said the funding is already already available because the original construction of Bennett Middle came in under budget.

Some people around town raised questions about why additional cafeteria space wasn't built during the construction of the middle school.

According to Wicomico County Public Schools, "The specs for the school were based on projected enrollment and the project budget at that time."

The project requires the approval of the Wicomico County Board of Education.

The Wicomico County Board of Education will vote on the proposed expansion at its next meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 8
