Federal Civil Rights Investigations Probe Virginia Schools

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP)- Federal investigations are looking into whether African-American students are discriminated against by Virginia school systems.

As of April, the U.S. education department's Civil Rights office opened probes into Chesterfield, Henrico and Richmond schools. It's unclear when they'll conclude.

The three are among seven systems mandated to allocate federal money to combat a pattern the Virginia education department cited about suspending blacks with disabilities at a disproportionately high rate over several years.

Henrico spokesman Andy Jenks says the district looks forward to continuing to cooperate with the OCR and demonstrating its commitment to equal opportunities for all students.

Chesterfield spokesman Shawn Smith says the division looks forward to providing data, practices and policies to the OCR for review and it's confident the work complies with the law.
