Students, Parents Happy with US 301/MD-304 Overpass Opening

CENTREVILLE, Md. - A new overpass opened Tuesday at the US 301/MD 304 interchange in Queen Anne's County.

The project was completed a year ahead of schedule, according to a Maryland State Highway Administration official.

For former Queen Anne's County High School students Charley Rekstis and Darby DeStefano, it's been six years in the making. They say several accidents, including the death of a classmate, pushed them to go to the state for help.

Now, in place of the dangerous intersection between Route 301 and 304, they have the overpass.

"It's really exciting," Rekstis said. "I come home this way from college, so I'm seeing it get bigger and bigger each time I come home."

Mothers Barb Burkhardt and Niki Pino say they can finally breathe a sigh of relief knowing their children are a lot safer.

"Something needed to be done...and six years later we stand on it," Burkhardt said.

It's a road both parents and students say could save lives.

"Younger generations, people that were our age that got this whole thing going are going to be able to arrive to school safely," DeStefano said.

An SHA official says a ramp still needs to be completed before the entire $50 million project is done.
