Following Lawsuit & Financial Turmoil, 2017 Punkin Chunkin Canceled

Posted: 08/23/2017 11:33:00 -04:00 Updated:

BRIDGEVILLE, Del.--With less than 74 days until its annual event, The World Punkin Chunkin Association announced the 2017 Punkin Chunkin has been canceled following a series of financial issues and a lawsuit filed against the organization.

The organizers took to their Facebook page saying the landowners who normally host the event pulled back following a lawsuit filed last week. On Thursday, Suzanne Dakessian announced she filed the federal suit against the event organizers and participants, state officials and Discovery Communications. Dakessian was critically injured at last year's Punkin Chunkin, while working as a a Sharp Entertainment’s employee, when a trap door blew off a cannon called the "Pumpkin Reaper,"

The canceled event was set to take place November 3-5 in Bridgeville, marking the event's 31st year. Following last year's accident, organizers say they were facing funding issues after parting ways with the Discovery's Science Channel, Punkin Chunkin's main sponsor.

Refunds are expected to be issued within the next week.
