Storm Water Project on Williams Street in Berlin

Posted: Updated:

BERLIN, Md. -- Summertime is coming to an end, but it isn't stopping construction in the town of Berlin. The town is preparing for phase 2 of the stormwater project.

In recent weeks, neighbors have complained of flood waters destroying their homes.

"People store things, sometimes personal and non replaceable items in their garages, and to loose something like that...you can put a price on an item like that...because what it means to you it might mean something entirely different to me," says Dean Burrell.

The storm water culvert project on Williams Street will create more space for water. The town of Berlin says the expansion will eliminate flooding almost entirely.

During periods of construction, the town of Berlin says parts of Williams Street will remain closed.

And for some business owners, that closure is a bit of a concern.

"I have a boutique on the street and it’s a lot of traffic that comes up and down and notices my shop, so I'm hoping with the detour I will still get the foot traffic," says business owner, Lori Wagman.

The mayor of Berlin acknowledges inconveniences the detour may cause, but says the project must go on.

The construction project is expected to be finished by the end of the year.
