Berlin Moves Forward on Rails and Trails Project

BERLIN, Md. - The Berlin town council passed two motions last week to move forward with a Rails and Trails project.

The project would build a bike path along the Maryland and Delaware Railroad tracks that run through town.

Town officials said the path route would likely link Berlin Falls to the Main Street area and continue to run the full length of the town.

"Having a bike path would be a great way to bring more people into Berlin. They could come and ride the bike path. It could be a way for people to get around the town that doesn't have to come right through main street," said Melissa Reid of Berlin.

Town officials said the bike paths would likely be 10-feet wide with two-feet shoulders on each side.

Town officials said the new project is also a way to get more folks downtown. Business owners said they are happy to welcome new customers.

"Any additional traffic, whether it be foot, bicycle, whatever, is all a positive thing for downtown," said coffee shop owner Dana Gottloeb.

Berlin received a $30,000 grant from the state for a design survey. A total cost for that project is expected to be revealed in that work.

Town officials said they want parts of the new path to open by spring 2019, funding dependent.
