NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP)- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will provide nearly $6.7 million in funding for Chesapeake Bay cleanup in Virginia, targeting the reduction of nutrient and sediment overloads.

The Daily Press reports that most of the funds will go to the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality to fund anti-pollution measures, with $20,000 earmarked for Virginia Tech to assist the Chesapeake Bay Program with improving the efficiency of load reduction technologies.

Chesapeake Bay Foundation Hampton Roads Director Christy Everett said in a statement Tuesday that the funding highlights the importance of the CBP's role in cleaning up Virginia waterways to meet restoration goals by 2025.

The CBP is a regional partnership of bay states, the federal government, conservation advocates, academic institutions and citizen groups working since 1983 to restore the estuary.
