REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- The original Dogfish Head Brewings & Eats pub has been demolished, more than two decades after it opened.

The downtown Rehoboth Beach landmark was torn down Monday.

"It kind of breaks my heart a little bit," said Linda Federman of Rehoboth Beach, who witnessed the demolition Monday. "It's sad. It was our local Cheers. It was our local tavern, and it makes me feel kind of sad to watch it come down."

Dogfish Head was the smallest commercial brewery in the United States when the pub opened in 1995. Since then, Dogfish Head has grown into the 14th largest craft brewery in the nation, according to the Brewers Association trade group.

Dogfish Head opened a new brewpub next door to its old location in May. The old pub was torn down to make way for a new courtyard.

"It'll be an open space," said Dogfish Head Vice President Mariah Calagione. "The backside will be where our brewery and distillery sits so when you're sitting in the courtyard you can look int. Mostly it will be an open space, with some outside dining."

Calagione said once the construction is complete, the courtyard could open as early as next spring.
