Virginia Republican Activist Resigns Over Trump Comments

SPRINGFIELD, Va. (AP)- A Republican activist from Virginia has resigned from the party, citing President Donald Trump's "appalling comments" about Haiti and African countries as the catalyst.

News outlets report Kyle McDaniel sent a letter of resignation to state GOP officials Tuesday, saying the Republicans have embraced nativism.

The 28-year-old McDaniel was elected to the party's state central committee in 2016. He's also worked as an aide for Fairfax County Supervisor Pat Herrity, who says he still hopes McDaniel will someday run for office as a Republican.

A congressional district committee member, 32-year-old Stephen Spiker, says the Virginia party is currently experiencing a generational divide.

State GOP Chairman John Whitbeck says McDaniel "owes every member of his party an apology for repeating the Democrat talking points that Republicans are a bunch of racists."
