Maryland Man Gets 2 Years After Swatting That Injured Victim

BALTIMORE (AP/WBOC)- A Maryland man has been sentenced to two years in prison for his role in a swatting incident that left the victim with significant injuries after police shot him with rubber bullets.

Authorities announced 26-year-old Zachary Lee's sentence in a news release Thursday.

According to Lee's plea agreement, in February 2015 he and others called a terrorism hotline pretending to be the victim, an acquaintance of Lee's. The caller told authorities he had three hostages and threatened to execute them.

Authorities say over 40 Howard County Police Department officers, unaware the call was false, responded to the victim's home. The victim was shot with rubber bullets in the chest and face. He suffered injuries including bruised lungs, a fractured rib, and broken bones in his face, and had to undergo three facial reconstructive surgeries.

Investigators subsequently discovered that the victim was not in possession of loaded firearms or explosives, did not make the emergency call, and there were no hostages at the home.

An alleged co-conspirator, 19-year-old Robert Walker-McDaid of England, has an extradition hearing in March.
