SALISBURY, Md. -- The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services awarded Peninsula Regional Medical Center with a five-star rating this month, making it one of four hospitals in Maryland to receive the honor as well as the second one on the Eastern Shore.

CMS considered seven different principles of care and comfort when evaluating a hospital on 57 different measures, some of which include mortality, readmission, safety of care, patient experience, efficient use of medical imaging, and timeliness and effectiveness of care. Of those categories, CMS said PRMC performed above the national average in mortality, safety of care, readmission, and efficient use of medical imaging. CMS also said the hospital performed better than the national average in other areas like serious surgical complications, treatment of C.diff. and the prevention of blood clots.

"Not many hospitals can look back 120 years and be proud of the outstanding work their healthcare team is doing today to carry on the legacy and tradition of the great work of those who came before them," PRMC President/CEO Steve Leonard said in a statement. "In my 15 years here, I have witnessed our team of medical staff, nurses, technicians, and support staff do amazing things for our community. The CMS designation reinforces what a high performing and compassionate team we have always had."

CMS awarded 337 hospitals with the honor, which is only about 9 percent of the 4,805 hospitals in the survey. A majority of American hospitals receive an average of a 3-star rating. The only other hospital to receive a 5-star rating on the peninsula was the Christiana Hospital in Wilmington.
