2017 Was Delaware's Second Warmest Year on Record

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP)- It looks like 2017 could be the second warmest year on record for the state of Delaware.

Last year was 2 degrees warmer than normal on average. The preliminary data are based on temperatures recorded since 1895.

The state has seen a slight increase in temperature with each decade since record-keeping began. The hottest year on record in the First State was in 2012.

Scientists with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration say that the five warmest years on record have all occurred since 2010.

John Byrne, director of the University of Delaware's Center for Energy and Environmental Policy, says the burning of fossil fuels is the main cause of global warming.
