PIKESVILLE, Md. (AP)- Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz, a Democratic candidate for governor, has announced that a former Montgomery County Council president will join his campaign as a candidate for lieutenant governor.

Kamenetz said Thursday that Valerie Ervin - if elected - would become Maryland's first female African-American lieutenant governor.

Ervin served two terms on the council, including a period as council president. She was previously elected to the Montgomery County Board of Education.

Ervin began her career in grassroots activism as an organizer for the United Food and Commercial Workers union.

After nearly a decade of service as an elected official, Ervin took the post of executive director of the Center for Working Families. She leaves her current position as senior adviser for the Working Families Party.
