AP-NORC Poll: Most Americans See Drug Addiction as a Disease

Posted: Apr 05, 2018 9:05 AM Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP)- A new survey finds that a slim majority of Americans recognize drug addiction is a disease that requires medical treatment. But most also say they would not welcome those suffering from drug addiction into their neighborhoods, workplaces or families.

Most medical authorities view drug addiction as a disease. And experts say overcoming the social stigma against addiction is key to reversing the current crisis of opioid abuse.

A national survey by The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research finds 53 percent view addiction as a medical problem. But less than 1 in 5 Americans are willing to associate with someone suffering from drug addiction as a friend, work colleague or neighbor.
