NORTHAMPTON, Va.- Authorities say a man was killed and another injured late Tuesday evening in a two-motorcycle accident involving a horse on Virginia's Eastern Shore.

Virginia State Police said the crash occurred at around 9 p.m. on northbound Route 13, south of Birdnest Drive in Birdsnest, Northampton County.

A 2007 Harley Davidson and a 2005 Hyosung motorcycles were traveling northbound on Route 13, when a loose horse entered the highway, traveling westbound, and was struck by the operator of the 2007 Harley Davidson. Police said the operator, Shawn Michael Simpson, 26, of Painter, Virginia, was killed instantly.

Troopers said the operator of the Hyosung, Constante Nicholas Stephano, attempted top avoid the crash and laid down the bike further down the road. Stephano was flown to Norfolk Sentara Hospital with serious injuries. The horse died at the scene.

Notification was made to family members. Police said neither alcohol nor speed were a factor in the accident.
