ELLENDALE, Del.- A Georgetown, Delaware, man is facing theft and related charges after authorities say he stole approximately 50 crab traps, as well as cash and scrap metal from an Ellendale man's home while he was on vacation.

Delaware State Police said the incident occurred sometime between June 18 and July 3 at a home located on the 14000 block of Beaver Dam Road.  The 40-year-old male victim reported that he was on vacation, and when he returned to his home he noticed that property had been missing and a window was unsecured.  Further investigation revealed that a jar containing an undisclosed amount of money, as well as the crab traps and scrap metal, had been taken.

Troopers were able to identify 29-year-old Eric B. Whitman as the suspect. Police said it was discovered that Whitman had taken the stolen metal to a scrap yard, signed the receipt indicating he was the owner, and received a cash payment.

On Saturday, July 7, Whitman was arrested and charged with second-degree burglary of a dwelling, Theft $1,500 or Greater, Selling Stolen Property Value Over $1,500, Theft Under $1500, Theft By False Pretense Under $1,500, and Falsifying Business Records.  He was ordered held in the Sussex Correctional Institution on $17,000 secured bond.
