Ocean Pines Defends Euthanizing 300 Geese

OCEAN PINES, Md.- Ocean Pines is now defending its decision of euthanizing nearly 300 Canada geese. It's a decision that caused an uproar in the community.

"I think that's unbelievable, they have been a part of Ocean Pines for as long as I can remember, so taking them away is like taking a part of Ocean Pines away," says community member, Ryan Roppelt.

The Ocean Pines Board of Directors says removing the geese was all a part of an effort to mitigate environmental damages, including nutrient saturation of local waterways.

Warren Roberts lives in Ocean Pines and agrees with the decision of removing the geese.

"I'm kind of happy that they had to take the geese away, because it was probably messy and it was too many of them," says Roberts.

The USDA says the geese were euthanized in a humane manner and they also say the geese will go to the Maryland Food Bank.

Jennifer Small works for the Maryland Food Bank and says the donation of the Ocean Pines geese is most needed.

"A donation of this magnitude will really help stretch the resources that we already have so that more families receive more food on their table," says Small.

The Maryland Food Bank says it will start serving the geese to the community, as early as this week.
