Bethany Beach Amends Canopy Ban

Bethany Beach has loosened some restrictions in its canopy ban.

On Friday, the town council voted to amend ordinance language regarding baby tents. Before the change, the shading devices could be no larger than 36 x 36 x 36 inches. Friday, that language was changed to 3 x 4 x 5 feet.

Council member Rosemary Hardiman says the move came after the town realized some baby tents being sold at nearby stores were different dimensions then what was technically permitted.

"We thought this was reasonable," she says. "It was something that gives parents more options in order to protect their infants and young children and it is still within the spirit of the original ordinance."

The town approved the tweak on Friday, forgoing the usual two readings of an ordinance. Hardiman says that’s because the change was minor, and most applicable in the summer months.

"We are helping Bethany stay good for families," she says. "Parents can protect their children a little better and do it not within the confines of 36 by 36 by 36. They might find something out there that's better."

Large umbrellas, tents, and canopies are still banned on Bethany Beach. The revised baby tents rules are in effect immediately.
