SMYRNA, Del.- Delaware State Police arrested a Smyrna man after a traffic stop led to an alleged assault on two law enforcement officers.

The incident happened Aug. 8 around 8:25 p.m., when a white Honda Accord, driven by James Mayer, was pulled over on northbound Dupont Parkway, south of Smyrna Landing Road, police said.

According to police, 38-year-old Mayer had an active warrant out for his arrest, in reference to a drug investigation.

Mayer allegedly resisted arrested, and a trooper deployed his TASER to detain him. During the struggle, two troopers sustained minor injuries. One trooper was taken to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital, where he was treated and released. The other declined medical treatment, police said.

Mayer was allegedly found to be in possession of 54.67 grams of crack cocaine and 17 oxycodone pills. He was arraigned before Justice of the Peace Court 11 for his active warrant on drug-related charges and current charges. He was committed to the Sussex Correctional Institution on a $120,000 secured bond.
