Fish from White Marlin Open Donated to Maryland Food Bank

OCEAN CITY, Md--Hundreds of people from across the country come to White Marlin Open with one big goal.

"Always hoping for a big catch," says one participant.

A lot of these big catches are donated to the Maryland Food Bank, Rose Stivers is the reason behind it all.

"Back then the fish were discarded in dumpsters and Marlin is actually really good to eat, so I went to some of the local churches to see if they could take some of the donations, and it just grew from there," says Stivers.

Fast forward to 30 years later, Stivers now works side by side with the Maryland Food Bank. As the fish come in, Stivers and the Maryland Food Bank, prep the fish for delivery.

Food source manager, Butch Langenfelder, says this week they have collected more than 1,400 pounds of fillet.

"We rarely ever get fish donations so this is our biggest fish donation of the year so this white marlin vent is a huge event for the food bank," says Langenfelder.

Son Spot Ministry is one of the churches that receives the fish donations

"After eating spaghetti every week, you do get tired of eating the same thing over and over again, so to have fish donated through the White Marlin Open is pretty awesome," says missionary, Ryan Swindell.
