DOVER, Del.- A former Delaware lawmaker was sentenced after being arrested three times in one month for assaulting his girlfriend during an argument.

John Atkins pleaded guilty to assault in the third-degree and three counts of breach of release. This resolution was reached after prosecutors thoroughly reviewed available evidence and consulted with the victim, who agreed to it.

Atkins was sentenced to his time served, which was 22 days in prison, and one year on probation. Atkins remains behind bars until an electronic GPS device is assigned to him by the Department of Corrections. The GPS will be monitored during his probation to insure no further contact between him and the victim.

Atkins is also required to undergo substance abuse and mental health evaluations, follow any recommended treatment along with attending domestic violence counseling.

Atkins is not allowed to possess firearms for the next five years. If he currently has any firearms, the Delaware State Police will seize them.

The victim agreed to this resolution which was reached by the available evidence.
