Cape Henlopen Hosts First Bilingual Back to School Fair

MILTON, Del.- The new school year is right around the corner and the Cape Henlopen School District is making sure that all students are ready to hit the classroom, even if English is not their first language. That's why some of the English teachers organized the first "Hispanic Family Back to School Fair."

"We want our families to feel comfortable coming into our schools," says English teacher and organizer Khara Bauer. "We'll do our best to bring them the information and everything available to them to help them be successful here and help their children learn," she added.

the event was held at mariner middle school in Milton. About 15 organizations offered the families plenty of resources in their language. For some students, this is a tremendous help.

"My mom doesn't speak English so, sometimes I help," says sixth-grader Angie Carranza. "This fair is great because people speak her language here. At times it's hard for me to translate because speaking two languages is not easy. I'm still learning," she added.

More than 100 people attended the event. Deleware Hispanic Commission president, Javier Torrijos, says this type of events is necessary to integrate the growing Hispanic population in Sussex County.

"These fairs should be held not just here in the Cape Henlopen School District, but also in other school districts. These are extremely important as the communities grow in areas like Seaford, Georgetown and more," said Torrijos.
