Dorchester, Mid-Shore Counties Prep for Purple

CAMBRIDGE, Md. - The color purple is taking over Delmarva's Mid-Shore. It first appeared in Talbot County, raising awareness on the state's drug epidemic. Now, more counties are joining in on the movement, including Dorchester County. Organizers are calling it Dorchester Goes Purple.

"Within 200 yards here, if you want crack, we might be able to find that. We might be able to bring up some crystal meth if you need it too," Dudley Parr, director of Overflow Cafe in Cambridge, said on Tuesday.

Parr says that because of surrounding neighborhoods overcome with poverty, he sees the drug epidemic before his eyes everyday.

"Heroin's horrific," Dudley said. "In the last year, I can think of four heroin addicts who are dead now."

Parr says long before the county considered going purple, the drug problem has stayed here.

Dorchester County States Attorney Bill Jones says drug-related cases aren't anything new to him either.

"We've been doing it for you know years now," Jones said. "And the efforts to prevent and stop it never end."

Dorchester Goes Purple organizers are bringing purple to the county, selling and distributing T-shirts, flags, fliers, and bracelets. They're just more things, Jones says, that show how the campaign will take on more than just the drug crisis.

"It's a way to educate the public about all these pieces - the prevention services that are out there and the treatment services that are out there," Jones said.

In September, organizers say more purple will show up in store fronts. Parr says he plans to put up lights in his cafe, hoping to spread more purple and more awareness.

Dorchester Goes Purple will officially kick of its campaign this Friday. Queen Anne's, Caroline, and Talbot counties will also join the kickoff.
