Salisbury University GIS Cooperative Comes to Downtown

Posted: Sep 17, 2018 5:13 PM -04:00 Updated:

SALISBURY, Md.- A part of Salisbury University is calling downtown Salisbury home. After roughly 18 months of construction, the Eastern Shore Regional GIS Cooperative now has a space in the City Plaza.

ESRCG has been around for 14 years, and has jumped around to six different office spaces. ESRCG Director Michael Scott hopes this is the forever home of the cooperative.

"Having our people downtown, having the space downtown, knowing that we're going to be attracting clients to come downtown to meet here in this space, that's awesome," Scott said.

Employees also say the new space will open up many new opportunities for ESRCG as well as the city of Salisbury.

"We kind of feel like we're home now, this reflects who we are," said ESRCG Program Manager Lauren McDermott.

ESRCG helps develop the data that's used in everyday apps, like Google Maps. Including mapping and data visualization on various digital platforms.

Now that the new office space is open, all 10 employees, who are all Salisbury University alumni, are able to work full time in the space.

"We have the room now to continue to grow. The space we were in before we had really maxed out. We were finding every nook and cranny we could stick a computer," McDermott said.

Since ESRGC started, they've seen about 150 interns come through. McDermott herself got her start at SU.

"It was so incredibly critical for me as an undergraduate and a graduate student. And I know it has been for so many and I look forward to promoting that on an even larger scale," she said.

ESRCG is a joint effort between Salisbury University, and two area planning and development agencies: the Mid-Shore Regional Council and the Tri-County Council for the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland.
