Wicomico County Wishlist Includes SBY Airport Expansion

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md.- In its annual meeting with the Maryland Department of Transportation, Wicomico County officials listed more than a dozen projects they'd like to see completed within the next few years.

Between county and municipal projects, on the top of the list was a 1,600-foot runway expansion at the Salisbury-Ocean City Wicomico Regional Airport.  It's a project Transportation Secretary Pete Rahn says he understands the need for.

"An expansion to accomodate larger, commerical planes as well as the prospects of FEMA using the airport for it's emergency activities," Rahn said.

Among the projects listed from the county included studies at the Salisbury Bypass.  Although the state assisted with $32 million for recent improvements to the bypass, the county says feasibility studies should look at traffic getting on and off the highway.

But with only $16 million in state funding allocated to all 24 counties within Maryland, Rahn says $75 million has been requested.  Wicomico County Council President John Cannon says they're hoping to get a piece of the pie.

"The money spreads out rather thin so you can only hope that you can get them everything that you need and you can try within the next year to accomplish what you'd like to get done," Cannon said.

Once MDOT has come up with it budget proposal, it will be presented to the General Assembly in January.
