Shuttle Driver Who Shot Man on Interstate Won't be Charged

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP)- The hospital shuttle driver who shot a man who threatened him with pepper spray during a dispute on a Delaware interstate won't be charged.

State justice department spokeswoman Julia Lawes says the Saint Francis Life Paratransit bus driver was firing in self-defense in accordance with Delaware law.

The bus driver told state police in July that an SUV driver pulled alongside him and pointed at him with a cellphone, and then both drivers pulled over on Interstate 95. He said he shot the SUV driver in the chest in self-defense and then called 911 and assisted with first aid.

The 53-year-old SUV driver survived the shooting.

Hospital spokeswoman Samantha Raftovich says the 28-year-old shuttle driver was fired as company policy forbids employees from carrying firearms.

On Saturday and Sunday the beaches of Ocean City will be filled with people looking up at the planes overhead.

The 12th annual event is expected to bring in thousands of people, so Dirato recommends getting to the 17th street area as early as possible to get a good spot.
