2018 Return Day Celebrates Bipartisanship - WBOC-TV 16, Delmarvas News Leader, FOX 21 -

2018 Return Day Attracts Hundreds to Georgetown

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, Del.- For the 103rd time in Delaware's history, hundreds from across the state gathered to hear the 2018 election results read out loud as part of Sussex County Return Day.

Per tradition, Return Day was held in the Georgetown Circle the Thursday after Election Day. In the parade, former political opponents walked or rode together in carriages as a sign of bipartisanship.

"It’s forgetting that the political phase of what’s just taken place and having time to communicate and come together to be one," says Georgetown Mayor Bill West.

The bipartisanship extended past the candidates, with the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War and Sons of Confederate Veterans ceremoniously shaking hands during the parade.

Return Day also featured Sussex County's political leaders burying a hatchet and the county's mayors competing in a hatchet toss competition (with Milford Mayor Arch Campbell winning this year's event). There were also food trucks, vendors, and traditional ox roast sandwiches handed out to the crowd for free, per Return Day tradition.

"It’s fun and interesting," says Tim Spong, who has attended Return Day since 1994. "The candidates winning and losing, the antique vehicles, the horses, marching bands, it’s all fun to see every two years."
