DOVER, Del. - The Delaware Division of Public Health is warning residents of a multi-state outbreak of Salmonella infections linked to raw turkey products.

According to the CDC, 164 people were infected with the strain of Salmonella Reading in 35 states, including one in Delaware. Nationally, 63 people have been hospitalized from the strain. There have been no hospitalizations in Delaware.

CDC officials say the outbreak strain was identified in raw turkey pet food, raw turkey products and live turkeys. People have reportedly gotten sick from preparing infected turkey, feeding their pets raw ground turkey pet food and from working in a facility that raises or processes turkeys.

There has not been a common supplier of raw turkey products identified. The CDC is now urging Delawareans to be prepared to avoid raw turkey during the Thanksgiving season. For steps to prevent the salmonella infection, visit the CDC website at: https://www.cdc.gov/salmonella/general/prevention.html.
