Former ECI Correctional Officer Sentenced to Six Years in Prison

Posted: Updated:

BALTIMORE- A judge in Baltimore has sentenced a former correctional officer to six years in a federal prison, following charges of drug smuggling at the Eastern Correctional Institution in Somerset County.

The Department of Justice says Jessica Vennie was convicted of racketeering in a scheme where correctional officers were allegedly bribed to smuggle in contraband. Prosecutors say Vennie smuggled in narcotics and used a cell phone to communicate with inmates about what they wanted to have smuggled in and to arrange meetings with outside facilitators. According to prosecutors, the "going rate" to have a CO smuggle in contraband was roughly $500 per package.

Prosecutors say once Vennie and other correctional officers smuggled in contraband, they would deliver it to inmates who would distribute it throughout the prison. Authorities say Vennie is one of the 77 defendants convicted in the smuggling scheme, and the last of the sixteen correctional officers to be sentenced.

The Department of Justice states that after her six-year prison sentence, Vennie will have three years of supervised release. Vennie was sentenced on Friday, after being found guilty in July.
