ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP)- A group of Maryland state senators have introduced a bill that would bar people granted probation before judgment on stalking charges from owning guns.

With probation before judgment, a judge sets aside a guilty plea and places the defendant on probation. The defendant must complete the terms of probation or return to court.

The Capital reports the bill introduced Monday would expand prohibitions on owning firearms.

Bill author Sen. Susan Lee, D-Montgomery, says the legislation is part of the discourse around the country's handling of violence against women.

Co-sponsor Sen. Sarah Elfreth, D-Annapolis, says evidence shows people convicted of stalking and domestic abuse are more likely to commit firearms crimes.

Elfreth and Lee say the bill is part of an effort to reduce the likelihood of offenders reacting with deadly force.
