In its 20th Year, Ocean City Blood Drive Seeks Donors

Posted: Updated:

OCEAN CITY, Md.- Every day hundreds of donors are needed to help keep blood banks stocked and ready to go. So every year, the Ocean City Blood Drive sets out to do just that.

Hundreds of people made it out to the first day of the two-day event yesterday at the Ocean City Convention Center.

Mark Paddack is no stranger to this event, in fact he's a regular.

"I've been doing this event since the very beginning, 20 years ago. I just retired as a policeman, and during the course of my career,i always prayed I'd never need blood, but if i did I'd already have a supply from being a Blood Bank of Delmarva donor, so, saving a life, either my own or someone else's," said Paddack.

It's an act of kindness organizers say, never goes unnoticed.

"It is not like as a blood bank we can you know say today we are not collecting blood, it is always in need, it is a 24-hour operation," said event organizer, Karesa Fleary.

The blood collected at this event will go straight to the 17 hospitals that depend on the Blood Bank of Delmarva.

"Actually we need 360 people every across the shore to donate to meet the needs of those hospitals," said Donor Recruiter, Suzanne Murray.

According to the Blood Bank of Delmarva, every pint that's collected can save the lives of 3 people.

Murray also says the blood bank struggle to keep their supplies in check during the month of January because factors such as the flu and the holidays, keep people from donating.

The two day event continues Wednesday, Jan. 23, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
