SALISBURY, Md. - A Salisbury man was sent to the hospital after an early morning fire damaged his home.

According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office, owner Alexander Scott reported the fire in his home at 5280 Chinaberry Drive at 4:35 a.m. Wednesday.

Firefighters from the Fruitland Volunteer Fire Department responded and put out the fire in less than 30 minutes.

Investigators say the fire was sparked by combustibles being too close to a candle in a second floor bedroom.

Authorities say a smoke alarm was present but did not activate.

Scott was taken to Peninsula Regional Medical Center where he was treated for smoke inhalation and released.

Damage to the home and its contents is estimated to be $30,000.
