Concern Grows Over Collapsed Ditch in Front Yard in Dagsboro

DAGSBORO, DE--A family in Sussex County says they feel trapped in their own home because their driveway has a big hole in it.

This is all because a tax ditch used to prevent flooding from heavy rainfall collapsed in a family's front yard.

"I literally have to walk out the house, walk across the sink hole and then get into my truck. It's ridiculous," says Chris Layfield.

The ditch collapsed in June due to severe flood waters. The family has since been using a wooden bridge to walk across their driveway.

"It does the purpose but in reality, it's not doing what I want it to do," says Layfield.

But his daughter, Kela Layfield, worries for the safety of her 10 month old son, while carrying him across the bridge.

"It's dangerous, if I happen to slip and fall with him in my arms, God only knows what's going to happen," says Kela Layfield.

The family says they've sent several emails to DNREC and state officials asking for help in fixing heir driveway.

DNREC officials said back in June, they were looking into the collapsed driveway. But, the family says no action has been taken to fix it.
