Updated: Indian River School District Holds Tuesday Referendum

Posted: Updated:

SELBYVILLE, Del. -- The Indian River School District is holding another referendum Tuesday, asking for a tax increase to pay for its growing student population.

The district is asking voters to approve a tax increase to pay for three building projects, such as a new Sussex Central High School as well as classroom additions to Indian River High School and Selbyville Middle School. The new high school building was approved in May. It would hold 2,200 students as opposed to the current building that holds 1,500 students.

IRSD also wants more money for staff, curriculum, and transportation expenses.

The district says the maximum possible tax increase to property owners would be, on average, about $87 per year.

Polls will be open Tuesday from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. at six schools in the Indian River School District.

Voters will decide on two items: The first item approves funding for a new building and added classrooms. The second item would fund additional costs that come with the new space, such as new staff.
