SALISBURY, Md.- An event that would have brought the governors of Maryland, Delaware and Virginia together next week in Salisbury has been postponed, organizers announced Tuesday.

In a statement, the Greater Salisbury Committee, which had organized the event originally slated for Feb. 11, said:

"The Greater Salisbury Committee has decided to postpone the proposed governors of Delmarva event, originally scheduled for February 11th on the campus of Salisbury University.

"The governors of Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia each value the Delmarva Peninsula and the people who call this great place home. GSC looks forward to bringing together Delmarva’s governors in the near future for a discussion on our region."

The GSC did not provide another date for the event.

The event would have brought Republican Gov. Larry Hogan of Maryland, Democratic Gov. John Carney of Delaware and Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam of Virginia together to speak at SU's Holloway Hall. Organizers said the goal of the event was to promote bipartisanship.

While the GSC did not cite it as a reason for the event's postponement, the accouncement comes at a time when Northam is embroiled in controversy surrounding a racist photo in his 1984 medical school yearbook.

Some community leaders agree with the decision to postpone the event. Jamaad Gould says holding the meeting right now would have been productive for Delmarva.

"There were a lot of things that people wanted to talk and hear them speak about but, with this type of controversy in the forefront it'd be impossible to focus on things that matter to us like farming immigration and things of that nature "

Earlier Tuesday, Delaware Gov. John Carney said he was "hopeful" Northam would resign
