DelDOT Looks to Make Bicycle Improvements on Route 1 in Rehoboth Beach

Posted: Updated:

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del.- Delaware is looking at how to make Route 1 safer for cyclists this summer.

At its meeting Wednesday night, the Delaware Department of Transportation's Bicycle Council discussed adding signage on portions of the highway and sidewalks in Rehoboth Beach to alert both drivers and cyclists.

The move comes after a "stencil campaign" on existing bike routes did not decrease the number of pedestrian accidents last season.

Making improvements before the busy summer season is critical, according to DelDOT's bicycle coordinator, John Fiori.

"If you go up and down Route 1, you may see many bikers riding up and down the sidewalk and along the designated bike lane, so we are hoping that these initiatives will help make it safer for not only international students but local residents and tourists who come to the area," Fiori said.

The council also was set to hear a presentation on the "Bike Route 1" corridor that runs from Fenwick Island north to the Pennsylvania line and to  consider potential improvements to that route, as well.
