CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. -- The Coast Guard rescued two people Wednesday after a lifeboat they were working on detached from a tanker and they fell overboard.

It happened about 70 miles east of Chincoteague.

According to the Coast Guard, two engineers were reported working on an enclosed lifeboat when it released and they both went with it. The crew of the tanker, Chemtrans Nova, contacted Coast Guard Sector Hampton Roads for help.

One of that station's ship was only 20 miles away and diverted to help. Coast guard members rescued both engineers, one of whom was still in the lifeboat and the other was in the water.

The Coast Guard said their injuries included a stomach laceration and a broken leg. They were flown to Norfolk Sentara General Hospital for additional care.

The Navy also assisted in the water rescue.
