MILTON, Del.- A nearly $30 million renovation project is moving forward at Milton Elementary School in Sussex County.

The project was approved as part of a referendum back in 2016.

An addition will be built at the back of the property that will include more classrooms and a new cafeteria.

Existing spaces will also see improvements.

The front of the school will be restored and look the same, but the main entrance will be moved to the back of the building for safety reasons, complete with a new lobby and main office.

"That allows us to go with a dual entry vestibule, so we can buzz people into the front door, but they're not into the building. We have a chance to talk to them through the video access system screen and scan their drivers license," said Director of Capital Projects Brian Bassett.

The hope is to begin construction in the fall.

Students and staff will use the old H.O. Brittingham building while work is underway.

The renovated Milton Elementary School should be open by 2021 in Sussex County.
