Plans Underway for Shared Bike Path in West Ocean City

Posted: Updated:

WEST OCEAN CITY, Md--Plans are underway for improvements to a busy section in Worcester County and it's all in the name of safety.

Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) is working to add a bike path beginning at the intersection of MD 611. The path will extend towards the Route 50 bridge.

Bicyclists say they're relieved the path is coming, mainly because of how busy it can get along Route 50.

"In the summertime, it's very unsafe to ride a bicycle down here. The area will fill up with cars," says bicyclist, David Saylor.

The projected cost for this project is 1.8 million dollars and includes adding pedestrian signals, improving drains, and upgrading the street lights.

SHA officials say as soon as they secure a contract, they will begin work on this project.
