Public Transportation Use up on Maryland's Eastern Shore

Heavy traffic is expected by AAA for the fourth of July weekend.

MILLSBORO, De-Many in Sussex County are fed up with traffic congestion in downtown Millsboro. But many say there's no avoiding this traffic because it's one of the only ways to get to the beach, and other parts of the county.

Now, town officials are requesting that additional bypasses come to Millsboro, like another possible bridge to increase traffic flow.

Delaware Representative Richard Collins, says he plans to ask DELDOT to conduct a traffic study to explore the feasibility of constructing an additional bridge.

He says he's not revealing where his plans for the bridge are currently, but a bypass is greatly needed so traffic in the downtown area continues to flow.

But some downtown say if people bypass Route 24, this may hurt their business.

Brian Reeves owns a local barbershop in Millsboro, he says he's all for alleviating traffic, but "When it does slow down, it does give access to see the shop more."

Chase Atkins works at Plate and Palate in Millsboro, he says "I think it would also turn down a lot of business because a lot of people come through this way everyday, and they see all the different businesses and stuff."

But some say the congestion is just too bad to ignore.

"We need another way to get down to the beach, cause it's hard getting in and out of the beach anyway. No matter which way you're going, it's always hard getting out," Charles Shelton said.

The town is also considering upgrading streets outside of Millsboro, and adding signage to the area to encourage people to use other back routes, rather the Route 24.

DELDOT says they're aware of the request, and plan to speak to the local officials on the matter.
